Westfield – Daniel J. Manning, 93, passed away peacefully Tuesday at the Holyoke Soldier’s Home.  He was born in Springfield on August 3, 1924 to the late Daniel J. and Gladys (Johnson) Manning Jr.  Dan was educated at Classical High School and Technical High School, and American International College.  He enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre with VBM 611 as a Staff Sergeant.  As an Aviation Radar Technician and Radio Line Chief, his station included Zamboanga, Mindano in the Philippines.  He received 5 medals, 7 ribbons with 3 battle stars including the American Theatre, Asiatic Pacific with 2 stars, Victory China, Presidential Unit Citation, Asiatic – Pacific one star, and Philippine Liberation one star.  Dan and his brother Richard both followed their father into the Springfield Fire Department in 1947.  Dan retired after a noted career in 1980.  Dan leaves his beloved wife Eleanor (Modzelesky) Manning and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his brother Richard Manning.  Family and friends are asked to gather, Thursday, October 12, 2017 at 11:30 AM for a Liturgy of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, 120 Holyoke Road, Westfield.  Burial will follow with full military honors at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Daniel’s memory to the Holyoke Soldier’s Home, 60 Cherry Street, Holyoke, MA 01040.  Westfield Funeral Home and Cremation is assisting the family, for further information please visit www.westfieldfuneralhome.com for Daniel’s memorial page.
