The life of Agustin Medina 1928-2016
Born on August 28, 1928 in Ponce, Puerto Rico to Cristina Torres (deceased) and Aquilino Medina (deceased) both also from Puerto Rico.
Agustin became a well-known baseball pitcher for the Leones de Ponce (Lions of Ponce) in his early adult years. His baseball career was in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. During his short lived baseball career, he trained in Florida with some of the most famous baseball players of all times like Satchel Paige in Baton Florida in Class A. He was traded to the Cubans and later traded to the Negro league for a very short period of time. He traveled with both teams throughout the south in the exhibition games.
He was married Carmen Milagros Palmeri in the early 1950’s. After he married, he moved to New York City with his bride and had five children. He worked as a truck driver for several companies in the garment district, where he organized a truckers union in 1969. Shortly after the union was established he returned to Ponce, Puerto Rico and became the owner of a trucking business. After the divorce of his wife, he later married Norma Gaits of Ponce, Puerto Rico and they had one child Wilberto and later divorced. While living in Puerto Rico, up to 2011 his dear friend and companion was Julia Vargas. (deceased) and her daughter Wanda. He was well known as a fisherman who loved to fish in deep ocean waters. Although losing most of his eye sight, Agustin continued to remain up to date with his passion of baseball and the politics of Puerto Rico. After returning to the United States, he became ill up to the time of his death. He received his care at Wingate of South Hadley, where the immediate care staff and the support staff became part of his community.
He leaves his children Norma Christou, her husband Jim, their two daughters Leilani and Bianca and their husbands Chris and Bryce, all residing in Canada. Two great grandchildren Micah and Davis. Betty Medina Lichtenstein, (Sam deceased) their children, Sam, Eric and Roy residing in W. Ma. Gus Medina and his three sons, Anthony, Nick (his wife Lindsay) Alex, residing in Missouri . Edna Lee (deceased) her two sons Chris and Justin both residing in S. Hadley Ma. Vincent Marc (deceased) his son Jonathan residing in the Boston area
Wilberto and his daughter residing in Puerto Rico. His living siblings are Roberto, Christina, Frances, Julio, Connie, and Elvin Deceased siblings are Vincent, Luis, and Jerry,
A mass in his memory will be held on Thursday September 22, 2016 at 9 a.m. at St. Anne’s Church on College Street (off Memorial Drive) Chicopee.
