Osvaldo Martinez Obituary

Osvaldo Joel Martinez, 25, passed away on September 1st, 2020 at Baystate Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family, after succumbing to his injuries from an automobile accident on August 22, 2020.  Joel was born on May 31, 1995 in Rio Piedra, Puerto Rico, to Alma Diaz and step dad Leonardo Bones.  He graduated from Commerce High School in Springfield, Ma.  Joel was an honorable man who served his country and served it well. He had one deployment and when he came back from his deployment he had his mind set on pursuing a 2nd career as a firefighter and succeeded with many other aspirations. Joel was full of ambition and determination and was someone who always put others before himself. He truly was one-of-a-kind, with a giant heart filled with love for everyone he met, consistently working to motivate and inspire his peers to do better and be better.  Joel was 25 when his life was taken from his family. He enjoyed cheering for his kids in karate, spending quality time with his family during the holidays and in his limited spare time, playing and watching basketball. If you asked his friends and family what his favorite thing was, they would say playing  basketball, playing games, and training in the martial arts. Joel is survived by his mother Alma Diaz and his step father Leonardo Bones, and his father Joel Martinez Rosado, his sister Lisa Correa and her fiancé Jonathan Melendez, material grandparents Luz Estela and Osvaldo Lopez, Sr.  He was the cherished uncle to Layla Faith, and nephew to Marisela Diaz and her husband Richard Pedraza, Francy Lopez and her husband Jorge Pagan, and Osvaldo Lopez and his wife Nicole.  He will be dearly missed by many friends who saw him like a brother, by his extended family members in Puerto Rico, and by all who knew him.  Calling hours for Joel will be Thursday, September 10th from 4-7PM at Bethany Assembly of God, 580 Main Street in Agawam.  On Friday, September 11th, a church service will begin at 12:00PM at the Bethany Assembly of God, with a burial to follow with full military honors at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Joel’s memory to Agawam American Legion 185, 478 Springfield Street, Feeding Hills, MA 01030. All funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Westfield Funeral Home and Cremation, 4 Princeton Street in Westfield.   To express condolences to the family, please visit www.westfieldfuneralhome.com for Joel’s tribute page.
