WESTFIELD - Born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, Sonia Alfaro enjoyed swimming, dancing, and traveling. Her journeys included Santo Domingo, Spain and Mexico. Sonia would go on to study education, becoming a Bilingual Special Education teacher, teaching in Puerto Rico, Erie PA, Westfield, Holyoke, and Springfield MA throughout her career.
Sonia brought empathy, love, compassion, and humor to her role as a life-long Special Education teacher. She sought to not only grow the confidence and potential of her students but to also touch their hearts. Sonia would regularly share stories of her students. Her favorite story was of a time she asked her first grader if he had done his homework, to which he proudly replied “almost!”.
Sonia’s love for others extended beyond the classroom, as she formed close bonds with colleagues, neighbors, and members of her church family. Her friends remember her as witty, honest, caring, and dependable. Sonia cherished every relationship, seeing them as an extension of her family.
She enjoyed cooking, basketball, watching scary movies, and singing, and was a member of her church choir. Her faith was evident in all aspects of her life. She attended the Westfield Evangelical Free Church for over 30 years, rarely missing a Sunday or event.
There aren’t enough words to express the deep void that now permanently occupies our hearts. There will never be another educator, mother, grandmother, friend, or sister like Sonia Alfaro. We miss her voice, her smile, and her warmth.
